Kindergarten Readiness

This is my first attempt at creating a blog. I would be interested in what your school does for Kindergarten "readiness" testing. Please reply to this blog so we can all see how this is going to work!

At Hebron and Glen Ullin we use the School Readiness Test from Scholastic. Hazen uses this one also. After giving it one year, the teacher commented on some of the pictures are hard to understand (even for her) and in spelling section, she feels the words were too hard (light, feet, and mail).

Here's a good article about what schools can do to help communities and parents get their kindergarteners ready for school:

Jamestown uses the Metropolitan, but we're hearing that DPI is frowning upon it because of the 1994 copyright and outdated norms. Does anyone use Prmary MAP by NWEA for their kind. readiness test?

In Beach, we use the Phelps Kindergarten Readiness Scale (?), along with some “homemade” assessments for the spring kindergarten roundup. We also tried the Primary MAP testing with our kindergarten class last year and it seemed to go pretty well for us. It may not work as a tool for initial screening since you have to pay on a per child basis and download information approximately two weeks in advance (at least we do in Beach) in order to administer the tests, however, there may be a way around that as well!

Oakes using Renaissance Place computer program called STAR Early Literacy. It checks about 47 different areas. We test the Kindergarten students at least every other month. From this we develop a plan in order to work with the students and their area of needs.

Hazen continues to use the Phelps as mentioned by Hebron. Dave is right about DPI's concern about the old copyright date on the Metro. That is the reason Hazen switched to the Phelps.

Northern Cass uses the Brigance Screen I and II. It is a newer copyright and was accepted by the DPI. The NWEA or MAP does require you to purchase per student and a Class Roster file (CRF) has to be sent to NWEA roughly 2 weeks prior to testing. We will be using the MAP for our kindergarten this year, but not for readiness testing.
