What is your school’s policy (or procedure) regarding retention of students in the elementary grades?

At Beulah Middle School, a student in grades 5-8 who receives a failing grade, 69% or below, in two or more core subject areas (Mathematics, Language Arts, Science or Social Studies) will be retained in his/her current grade level for the following school year. A student who fails one core academic class is required to satisfactorily complete summer school prior to being promoted to the next grade level. Decisions regarding the promotion or retention of a student who has previously been retained at the middle level and receives a failing grade in two or more core subject areas will be made by a multidisciplinary team, including the parent(s)/guardian(s.) The well being of the individual student will be the primary factor considered. Students exceeding 20 absences in a core subject area must satisfactorily complete summer school prior to being promoted to the next grade level.
Our middle school retention policy is almost identical to that of Beulah's. The elementary is quite a bit different. If a retention is going to take place it occurs in Kindergarten or 1st grade. It is sometimes hard for parents to know if their child is ready to start kindergarten. There have been times that we have convinced the parents that it would not be in the best interest for their child to continue and that another year at home would be best. We had one student this year that started kindergarten and then was placed in our Special Education pre-school instead. Students who move into your school district to avoid retention is another issue. Grade placement for these new students can sometimes be a tricky determination. If a student is tested and is found to have a specific learning disability, we tend to NOT consider them for retention. Retention in the upper grades would typically only take place if a student was moving in from another district.
